چکیده

In osmoconforming species fluctuations of salinity in the bathing medium are paralleled by similar variations in the concentration of the body fluids (e.g. Arenicola marina (Schlieper, 1929), Chaetopterus variopedatus (Brown, Bzdil & Frisch, 1972), Mercierella enigmatica (Skaer, 1974a, b)). These animals are found living in media of a wide range of salinity. This implies either that their tissues are in some way protected from changes in the concentration of the body fluids or that their cells survive these changes by means of specializations in their metabolism. The excitable tissues, in particular, are sensitive to changes in their immediate surroundings. The relation between these tissues and their environment has been extensively studied at the cellular level (reviewed by Hodgkin, 1951; Caldwell, 1968; Treherne & Moreton, 1970). Action potentials in these cells are dependent on electrochemical gradients that exist across the cell membranes. These gradients result from differences in the concentrations of inorganic ions between the intracellular and extracellular media. If fluctuations in the ionic concentrations of body fluids were reflected by similar fluctuations in the fluids bathing the excitable cells, then the electrochemical gradients would be upset, at least temporarily, and abnormal action potentials might be expected. The structural relationship between muscle cells and the body fluids is usually simpler than that between nerves and their environment. Nerve cells are often ensheathed in glial and perineurial cells which may form a' blood-brain' barrier (Treherne & Pichon, 1972). This is not the case with muscle cells. The muscles of an osmoconforming serpulid polychaete have been chosen for study. This paper describes the types of muscle cells present and the accessibility of the extracellular fluid surrounding them to the changes in ionic composition that have been shown to occur in the blood (Skaer, 19740,5). Electrical activity recorded from the muscle cells is analysed and correlated with the different types of fibre observed.

Axonal adaptations to osmotic and ionic stress in an invertebrate osmoconformer (Mercierella enigmatica Fauvel). I. Ultrastructural and electrophysiological observations on axonal accessibility.

The giant axons in Mercierella are overlaid by narrow glial processes which provide an incomplete covering of the axonal surface. Where more complete covering occurs the intercellular clefts are not sealed by tight junctional complexes. Ionic lanthanum penetrates to the surfaces of axons from sea-water-adapted animals (in normal saline and during initial exposure to hyposmotic saline) and, also...

Ionic basis of axonal excitability in an extreme euryhaline osmoconformer, the serpulid worm Mercierella enigmatica (Fauvel).

Despite the extreme fluctuations in blood concentration experienced by this marine osmoconformer, essentially 'conventional' ionic mechanisms are involved in conduction by the giant axons in isosmotic conditions. The resting axonal membrane approximates to an ideal potassium electrode, with a 58-8 mV slope for decade change in [K+]O above 10 mM. The action potential overshoot shows a 55-8 mV de...

Axonal adaptations to osmotic and ionic stress in an invertebrate osmoconformer (Mercierella enigmatica Fauvel). II. Effects of ionic dilution on the resting and action potentials.

The giant axon of this extreme euryhaline osmoconformer possess an unusual ability to produce action potentials of large amplitude over a wide range of ionic dilution when constant osmotic concentration is maintained by the addition of mannitol to the bathing medium. Ionic dilution under these circumstances causes a decline in the overshoot of the action potential (resulting largely from reduct...

Free-living marine polychaetes (Annelida) inhabiting hard-bottom substrates in Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies.

As part of a larger comparative study, marine polychaete hard-bottom assemblages were surveyed using artificial substrate units (ASUs) deployed at four sites off the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. The polychaete fauna was represented by 19 families comprising 89 species. The syllid Exogone dispar was the most abundant polychaete followed closely by the serpulid Pseudovermilia occidentalis. At ...

Abstract This study was conducted to test the effect of bioremediation the polychaete worm Nereis diversicolor in order to removal of wastewater nutrition derived different densities Huso huso. The aim of this study was determination of different densities for creating the equivalence for rearing of N. diversicolor and H. huso rate in the integrated culture system. Three different densities of ...
